Grant Will Train Pediatricians for Poor Areas
Children’s Hospital has picked up a $1.9 million grant to train medical students to become primary care pediatricians in medically underserved neighborhoods.
Children’s Residency Program Director Dena Hofkosh says many areas in and around Pittsburgh are in need of primary care pediatricians, as well as family doctors. She says this is especially true of both urban and rural low-income areas.
The 5-year program will add two doctors per year for the three-year training course. Hofkosh says the doctors will not only get the traditional academic training of residency, but also hands-on experience in community primary care centers.
Hofkosh says this will be Children’s Hospital’s first attempt to target pediatrician training specifically for high-need areas.
Funding for the grant comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, by way of the Affordable Care Act.

Group Takes Old Drugs Saturday
Flushing or throwing away unwanted or expired medications are not viable options according to a local environmental official. However, but many local residents are unsure of how to get rid of their old drugs.
In an effort to help and educate the public, the Southwestern PA Household Hazardous Waste task force will be hosting a collection for expired or unwanted pharmaceuticals this weekend. The goal of this collection is to avoid continued pollution of the region's waterway when these drugs are flushed down the toilet. Pennsylvania Resource Council Director Dave Mazza says the pollution of water from pharmaceuticals has increased.
“Recently testing has been going on, a lot of water quality testing around the country, and a lot of these pharmaceuticals are showing up in water testing samples,” Mazza says. “We know that more people today are taking prescription medications than at any other time in recent history.”
Mazza says that the water treatment plants lack the ability to recognize these substances and cannot purify them either.
The collection, held Saturday, October 23 from 9 am to 1 pm, provides an opportunity to residents to dispose of prescription, over-the-counter, and veterinary medications in the proper way for a $3.00 registration fee. The task force will be collecting both prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals at the Mt. Lebanon Municipal Building, in order to dispose of them properly. Law enforcement will be on hand to ensure the proper handling of any controlled medications.
“You do not want to have these medications laying around the home or dispose of them improperly,” Mazza says. “This event gives people the opportunity to safely and conveniently dispose of these pharmaceuticals.”
Registration must be done ahead of time either online or by calling 412-488-7452.

State House Passes Bill to Protect Students With Allergies
Parents of children with food allergies can begin to feel a peace of mind as a bill that would force school districts to create a policy allowing children to carry epinephrine medication awaits the governor's signature. Passing the bill on a bipartisan vote of 180-19, the House was persuaded by the dangers of an allergic reaction without medication.
Bill sponsor Matthew Smith, a Democrat from Allegheny County, says it’s essential for children to be able to self-medicate themselves after an allergic reaction.
“It can strike a child at any moment and it’s imperative that they have these EpiPens on their person at the time they suffer from the food allergy attack. It will help prevent them from going into anaphylactic shock.”
If a child has an allergic reaction to something they ate, often nut-based, the child has only a few seconds to medicate themselves. Students are currently prohibited from carrying epinephrine medication such as EpiPen injectors in school and this legislation would allow those medications to be carried on the person at all times.
Smith says the bill is as much about ensuring peace of mind for parents as it is about the protection of students.
”It gives the parents the peace of mind that if their son or daughter has a food allergy they’ll have the EpiPen on their person at school to administer the medication that literally needs to be administered in a matter of seconds,” Smith says.
Concerns about the maturity of students carrying the medication and their knowledge of how to use it were considered in the legislation and the bill includes safeguards to ensure that the child knows how to use it along with physician and parental consent.

Pitt Researcher: Walking Helps the Brain
A study published today shows seniors who walk as little at one mile a day can prevent brain mass loss and slow the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Study author Kirk Erickson says his study piggybacked on a study looking at cardiovascular health. That study looked at the walking habits of people in their 60’s. Nine years later Erickson measured the participants’ gray matter volume and found that those who walked six to nine miles a week had a slower rate of loss than those who did not regularly exercise. He then looked at the onset of Alzheimer’s disease 13 years out and again found that those who regularly walked were less likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s. The University of Pittsburgh Professor of psychology says there is no magic to 6-9 miles and there is no reason to believe that walking is better than any other cardiovascular activity. However he notes that walking is something that nearly all seniors can do. “You don’t have to be a marathon runner to benefit,” says Erickson. walking more than nine miles a week did not have any additional benefit. According to the data. Erickson says it is never too early to begin an exercise regiment and the study shows that as far as brain health goes, it is also never to late to start. Of the 229 seniors studied, 116 developed cognitive impairment or dementia but those who walked regularly cut their risk of memory loss in half. Erickson says he would like to be able to do more studies of this type. In the future he hopes to look at how long the impact of a regular walking routine lasts after a senior stops walking and he hopes to use more accurate measurement tools that have recently become available.

UPMC Transplant Program Resolves Paperwork Violations
Hospital officials say state inspectors have revisited UPMC's Presbyterian Shadyside transplant programs and have determined that violations of federal documentation rules have been corrected. UPMC spokeswoman Kristin Beaver says on June 14 the Pennsylvania Department of Health "re-surveyed UPMC's transplant programs and they informed our staff that seven of our programs have been re-certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for the next three years."
A March inspection discovered "serious" violations and at the time UPMC said the paperwork problems were easily remedied. Inspectors never suggested that there was any danger to patients. However, if the health system had no corrected the problems within 6 months, it could have been denied Medicare reimbursements for transplants. Beaver says they expect to receive official notification of re-certification within a few weeks.

Bills Would Overhaul Methadone Regulation
A Pennsylvania Senator wants to strengthen state controls on the use of methadone, a drug used to treat opiate addiction.
Senator Mike Stack of Philadelphia County says methadone is dangerously addictive and can kill patients. He says methadone treatment started in the 1970s, but it’s even more common now.
Stack says one of his two bills would create a Methadone Death and Incident Review Team, which would work with the Department of Health to translate methadone fatality data into policy recommendations.
“Whether it’s some kind of incident where somebody has a car accident or whether they die, we’d determine what role the methadone played,” says Stack. “If it was a role that was harmful, then that’s something we’d have to look at for our statistics to determine where we’re misusing methadone and where the wrong candidates are getting methadone.”
Stack’s other bill would create the Methadone Addiction Prevention and Treatment Act. Stack says that would permit methadone use only when other treatment options are exhausted.
If methadone is used, patients would be assigned a schedule to gradually stop using methadone. Patients would also have counseling for two hours each week to determine if the treatment is working, and clinics would be open every day to prevent users from taking large doses home over the weekend.

Department of Health Spokeswoman Stacy Kriedeman says this is a crucial time for vaccinations, because the H1N1 threat is far from over.
“It’s important that people, particularly those in the recommended groups, continue to get vaccinated against H1N1,” says Kriedeman. “We also anticipate there will be a third wave of this pandemic, so we don’t want people to get complacent.”

Pitt Researchers Create Quick T.B. Test

"We can take samples of T.B., add these bacteriophages, allow them to inject their DNA [into the T.B. cells], and we can now see the T.B. cells because they flouresce. They glow green," says Hatfull. In addition, by adding known tuberculosis antibiotics to the bacteriophages, scientists can determine what strains of bacteria the drugs work against -- and those against which they don't work. Though some strains of T.B. are untreatable, Hatfull says it is just as important to identify these victims as well as those they can help. "What is currently happening is they are spreading [untreatable strains] to other patients while they are in the clinic waiting for diagnosis or waiting for treatment," says Hatfull. "At least those patients could be isolated." Hatfull says this method of testing needs to undergo some length of clinical trials, but it should be ready to use as soon as it is deemed safe and practical.
