Movies... For Free! Night Tide (1961)

Showcasing classic movies that have fallen out of copyright and are available freely from the public domain (with streaming video!)...

Night Tide Dennis Hopper
Night Tide, 1961.
Directed by Curtis Harrington.
Starring Dennis Hopper, Linda Lawson, Gavin Muir and Luana Anders.

A low budget offering from American International Pictures and writer-director Curtis Harrington, Night Tide stars Dennis Hopper as young sailor Johnny Drake. Enjoying his shore leave in Venice Beach, California, Johnny meets a mysterious 'mermaid' called mora (Linda Lawson) at a marina carnival attraction. Sparking up a relationship, Johnny discovers that all of Mora's previous lovers have died in suspicious circumstances. Mora believes herself to be a descendent of the Sirens, seductresses from Greek mythology who lure sailors to their deaths, and is frequently visited by the sinister Madame Romanovitch (Marjorie Eaton), who calls out for Mora to fulfil her destiny. Will Johnny become the latest victim, or can Mora resist her temptation?

Premiering at the Venice International Film Festival in 1961, it would be a further two years before Night Tide saw general release via Roger Corman's Filmgroup as part of a double-bill with The Raven (1963). It also features Corman regular Luana Anders, who would appear in later Hopper works including The Trip (1967) and Easy Rider (1969), and was selected for preservation by the Academy Film Archive in 2007.

Not a good day in Yankeeland

Sorry I haven't written much as of late, but I haven't gotten to see more than bits and pieces of the last few Yankee games. No truth to the rumor that I was trying to snag that pork chop on a stick!

Of course, it figures that today's debacle is one I did get to see.

First up, seeing A-Rod hit that line drive that hit David Huff in the head was brutal to watch. Yikes! Poor guy. Fortunately, Huff is already out of the hospital, and appears to be A-OK.

I was pretty peeved to see Joba Chamberlain have yet another bad outing, and for the Yankees to lose this game. Geez, you have a six-run lead, you should win the game.

Squawker Jon was so pleased about what happened, he watched the seventh inning on the replay just to see it all!

And Wally Matthews, of all people, made an interesting observation, noting how Joe Girardi referred to Chamberlain:
Afterward, Girardi could barely conceal his disgust.

"We had the game where we wanted," the manager said, his face tight and the veins in his neck throbbing. "We had our eighth-inning guy in, we needed four outs from him ... and he left pitches in the middle of the plate. He just didn't make the pitches when he had to."

Not once did he refer to his pitcher by name. Chamberlain, the darling of the final days of the old Yankee Stadium, had become "he" and "the eighth-inning guy." No longer to be trusted, neither was he fit to be named.

"Players aren't going to be bulletproof," Girardi conceded. "But he's had some bad outings. He's our eighth-inning guy and he's got to get it done for us."
Yes, that's how strange a day it was - Wally Matthews made some good points!

R.I.P. Dennis Hopper (1936-2010)

Dennis HopperHollywood legend Dennis Hopper has died at his home in California earlier today from complications of prostate cancer, aged 74. Hopper - who had battled the illness for almost a year and had recently received a long-overdue star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - enjoyed a career that spanned over half a century. He achieved critical success as an actor, filmmaker, photographer and artist, as well as cult status for his roles in classic films such as Easy Rider (1969), Apocalypse Now (1979) and Blue Velvet (1986).

Born in Dodge City, Kansas, Hopper made his screen debut in 1955 alongside James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause and featured in Dean's final film Giant the following year. After a host of supporting film and TV roles throughout the 60s Hopper enjoyed a career breakthrough as co-writer, director and star of Easy Rider, receiving the Prix de la premiere oeuvre (First Work Award) along with an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay with Peter Fonda and Terry Southern.

Although his next directorial effort The Last Movie (1971) won the Critic's Prize at the Venice Film Festival, the film's disappointing performance forced Hopper to step back from Hollywood and he spent much of the 70s appearing in low budget affairs while battling drug and alcohol addiction. During this period he starred in Francis Ford Coppolla's epic Vietnam War movie Apocalypse Now and returned to the director's chair for 1980's Out of the Blue.

Entering rehab in 1983, Hopper began his comeback that same year with acclaimed performances in Rumble Fish and The Osterman Weekend before his iconic turn as sadistic villain Frank Booth in David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986) and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Hoosiers helped to revitalise his fortunes. He would spend much of the remainder of his career in supporting roles in films such as True Romance (1993), along with villainous turns in a host of movies including Red Rock West (1992), Super Mario Bros. (1993), Speed (1994), Waterworld (1995) and Land of the Dead (2005).

Hopper's last feature appearance came in 2008 with Wim Wenders' Palermo Shooting, while his final performance - voice work for the upcoming computer animation Alpha and Omega - is set for release later this year.

OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY: MOFFIT CRUISES TO VICTORY; BLEICH, GOULDING, AND PATTON ALSO TAKE WINS

By Tommy Goudge (May 28, 2010) - Kyle Moffit has shown plenty of speed since he began racing weekly at Ohsweken Speedway in August last year. The twenty-two year old from South Dayton, NY translated that speed into a feature win on Friday night, his first at Ohsweken, and first since going to victory lane at what is now Mohawk International Raceway on July 16, 2005. Billy Bleich, Jr. and Trevor Goulding won their second consecutive features in the ESSO Thunder Stocks and ESSO Mini Stocks respectively, while Dave Patton claimed his first ever Bomber division feature win, and Jesse McDonald was chosen by the fans as the winner of the "Gauntlet Race". The large crowd on hand for "Bring Your Neighbour Night" presented by Engine Pro Racing was treated to a fast-paced evening of racing which ended just before 10:30 p.m.

CORR/PAK MERCHANDISING SPRINT CARS
Kyle Patrick and James Evans made up the front row for the second Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car feature of 2010, and when the green flag dropped Patrick took off. Eventual feature winner Kyle Moffit wasted no time getting to the front, and made his way from sixth on the grid to second in the first lap. Jamie Collard - substituting for Mike Ling in the Miles Hill #7x - made his way to the front early as well, taking over third place.

The first fifteen laps ran caution free, with Moffit drawing in on Patrick as the two worked slower traffic at the halfway point. Moffit made his move on lap eleven and began to stretch the lead. The only caution flag of the night flew on lap fifteen when James Evans lost his right rear tire in turn one, but on the restart it was all Moffit, who opened up a large gap and held on for the win despite a bent nose wing. Round one feature winner Dave Dykstra also got by Patrick as the laps waned down, but ran out of time to catch Moffit. Patrick settled for third, followed by Jared Zimbardi, and Collard.

"The bent (nose) wing may have helped us actually," said Moffit in victory lane. "The car was tight before that."

Heat races for the twenty-four car field were claimed by Zimbardi, Dykstra, and John Riegling, while the consolation race went to Jamie Turner. 2009 Corr/Pak champion Tom Huppunen suffered a setback to his hopes of repeating this season for the second week in a row when he tangled with Chris Durand in heat race number three and got upside down. Both drivers scratched for the remainder of the evening.

ESSO THUNDER STOCKS
Jeremy Bean and Chris Dickie started the ESSO Thunder Stock feature from the front row, but the field quickly fanned out two and three wide, with intense racing throughout the top ten until Mike Thorne went for a spin in turn three on lap four. When the race went green again, Lee Winger and Billy Bleich began to separate themselves slightly from the rest of the field until a caution flew again on lap nine for debris.

Back under green flag conditions, Bleich and Winger went at it for the top spot until Winger suffered a flat right rear and went to the pits on lap fourteen. Bleich was never seriously challenged for the rest of the twenty lap distance, despite another caution for debris in turn four on lap nineteen. Bleich took the feature win, while Ryan Dinning, Dave Bailey, Gord Bates, and Mike Thorne rounded out the top five.

Dinning and Jamie Cox took the heat race wins for the nineteen car field. 2009 champion Shayne Pierce looked to be a contender for the feature win until left front suspension problems forced him off the track.

ESSO MINI STOCKS
Mike Taylor and Ethan Martin paced the field to the start of the ESSO Mini Stock feature, but a lap was not completed before Paul Goodale made heavy contact with the backstretch wall after tangling with another car. Goodale narrowly avoided getting upside down, and suffered enough damage to end his race. When the green flag flew again Taylor moved into the lead, but a swarm of fast cars were close behind. Kevin Hilborn took over the lead from Taylor and for awhile looked like he could hold on for the win, but got too sideways on a few occasions, allowing Goulding to catch up. Goulding made his move for the win with just two laps to go, while Hilborn settled for second, followed by Craig Erskine, Mike Evers, and Steve Hess.

Heat races for the twenty car field were claimed by Goulding and Abel Castelein. Former two time champ Castelein suffered another blow to his 2010 championship chances when he was forced to the pit area midway through the feature with his #28 heavily smoking.

BOMBERS
Dave Patton and Matt Jensen started on the front row for the Bomber feature, and Patton took over a lead he would never relinquish at the drop of the green flag. The race was not easy for Patton however, as slower traffic presented a challenge. Twelfth starter and round one feature winner Karl Sault made his way through the pack to finish second, while Jeremy Hughes, Trevor Roszell, and John Cote rounded out the top five.

Heat races for the nineteen car field went to Hughes and Shawn Ireland.

NEXT WEEK AT OHSWEKEN
The first round of the "Battle on the Grand" takes the green flag at Ohsweken next Friday night when the ASCS Patriots take on Ohsweken's Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprints! The ESSO Thunder Stocks, ESSO Mini Stocks, and Bombers, are also part of Friday Night Thunder round three, next Friday, June 4. Gates open at 6:00 with racing starting at 7:45!
