CASCAR SUPER SERIES: Peterborough Summary & Results

Beauchamp wins at Peterborough Speedway to earn his second CASCAR Super Series victory of 2005

PETERBOROUGH, ON – CASCAR Super Series veteran Ron Beauchamp won Sunday afternoon’s Logel’s Auto Parts 200 at Peterborough Speedway. The victory by the MOPAR Parts / Exide / Mobil 1 Dodge Charger driver was his second of the season and the fourth of his Super Series career.

Beauchamp started third in the 23-car field and took the lead on lap 114 of the 200-lap race when polesitter Kerry Micks pitted, along with most of the other front-runners. Beauchamp’s tires held up well through the rest of the race and he was able to build a three-second lead over Micks’ hard-charging PowerWater Taurus by lap 197.

That lead was erased, however, by the race’s sixth and final caution, with two laps to go. The final restart saw Beauchamp and Micks pull away from the field when the Challenger / Logel’s Dodge Charger of Brad Graham failed to come up to speed due to a flat tire. The Glencoe, ON racer was third at the time.

After Beauchamp and Micks took the white flag signaling the start of the final lap around the one-third-mile, high-banked oval, Micks got into the back of the MOPAR Dodge, sending him high into turn 2. Micks displayed great sportsmanship and allowed Beauchamp to get straightened out before resuming the battle for the win. Micks challenged the leader on the high-side as they entered turn 3, and on the low-side coming off turn 4. Both moves were ultimately unsuccessful and Beauchamp won by less than two-tenths of a second.

“The car was awesome from the get-go,” said Beauchamp in victory lane. “I had a big lead before we got that late caution and I thought, ‘I didn’t need that.’ And then I saw who was behind me and I knew I was going to have to work for the win. He got me sideways but he backed off and gave me a chance to get it corrected and we went from there.”

Micks was understandably proud of the result and made it clear that his intention wasn’t to spin Beauchamp on the last lap. “We wanted to give him a chance to straighten his car out because we don’t want to make a pass like that. I’ve been there too many times and I don’t race that way and I respect it back when the guys do it to me. I was just happy to get a second for the PowerWater team.”

Three-time National champion Dave Whitlock inherited third-place when Graham was slowed by the flat tire. Ironically, Whitlock also has a tire going down on his Avenue Motor Works / NMT Dodge Charger, but it held up until the car came to a stop for the podium celebration.

Points leader Don Thomson Jr. finished sixth in his Home Hardware Chevy, one spot ahead of Canadian Tire Chevy driver Peter Gibbons, his nearest rival for the National championship. Neither driver was in contention for the win at Peterborough. Castrol Dodge driver DJ Kennington started the Logel’s 200 in 10th place. His fourth-place finish ended his quest for a record-setting fourth-consecutive Super Series feature win.

The next CASCAR Super Series event takes place on the September 3-4 Labour Day weekend at Delaware Speedway, near London, Ontario.
