A full crowd was on hand on Saturday September 10th at the Brighton Speedway to see the 358 Dirt Modified Preview Dash for Cash. Four drivers were in attendance to give the fans a taste of what they will see on Saturday September 24th at the ImageFactor.ca Applefest 358 Dirt Modified Shootout.
Jeff Ciglich, Paul Pekkonen, Mark Hitchcock and Chris Jones all took to the track for a brief hot laps session and then a 6 lap Dash for Cash. Mark Hitchcock was quick to find the fast way around and took the checkered flag. Chris Jones was right there on his back bumper though. For Jones it was a coming home of sorts after many years of competition at Brighton. Chris fought a broken left front shock to challenge for the Dash win. Jeff Ciglich and Paul Pekkonen were not far behind the top two and battled to the line with Ciglich taking the third spot.
It was a busy night at Brighton as several other announcements were made. The most exciting was the announcement of a purse increase for the Saturday September 24th event. The race will now pay $1500 CDN to win (up from $1200) and will also pay $1000 CDN for second (up from $900). Positions 13 through 24 have also been increased. Any driver taking the green flag in the feature will now be guaranteed $300 CDN.
It was also announced on Saturday that the feature would be reduced to 40 laps from the previously scheduled 50. This was agreed upon by teams and track officials. The door has also been opened for DIRT Sportsman drivers to compete with the only stipulation being that they meet 2005 DIRT rules and run 358 Dirt Modified rear tires.
A draw was also held to determine which pre-registered team would win free pit passes for the Shootout. Paul Pekkonen and the #98 team were the lucky winners of this draw. They will receive 4 free pit passes for Saturday September 24th.
